Be Careful.

I'm just putting up this post to let all of us New Comers and to even to those folks that are already in Montello. However not just in Montello,but anyone listening, any where, and to myself probably most of all. In our daily lives, we need to remind ourselves that in the midst of wanting, trying, or doing anything in pursuit of our dreams, or plain daily tasks, that we need to be cautious of these things that can and will be a danger to us and to remind ourselves that unfortunate things can, and will happen to us in a eye blink. One of the last times myself my wife & youngest daughter was up to our property I let my 14 year old daughter take over the wheel to drive down 3/4s of the way in the truck and with the heavy trailer coupled to it, I myself didn't think there wasn't whole lot of concern since there are no cliffs, sharp turns, large boulders, switch backs of any kind for my wife to really worry about.
 But still my wife was very reluctant for her to take over the wheel cause she has no experience driving at all and I said well this will give her some idea how to operate a vehicle. And there was a little bit of YADA- YADA between my wife and I over it. You see my wife herself doesn't drive any kind of motorized vehicle at all and I know my daughter will be in line to get her drivers License soon enough. I have mentioned to my wife, just what if" what if something was to happen to me being I'm the primary driver and what if I was to get hurt (I don't allow myself to think my wife or daughter getting hurt)what would we do then , how would we go to get some kind of help? Well finally I let Tanisha take the wheel and she did a pretty good job doing so.
Ok all this being said and I will finally get to my point, we all need to look out for ourselves and one another when working alone, and being there are no Medical facilities out there in Montello we just need to keep in mind of what can, and will happen to us if we let our guard down. I'm certainly no stranger to a probable accident so I want to be as humble as one can be. Folks be careful, I don't want hear anyone getting hurt while in there pursuit of there dream...

The War for Water in Nevada

Abandoned sights.

Once you have come to Montello you'll find some Abandoned sights like this one however there are others out there in the landscape that is really is an ugly sight, (As seen on Geoff's blog) myself I would like very much to see alot of these sights cleaned up but I haven't come across any landfills in the area. With the aid of an old '63 ford 2 ton dump truck that looks like it belongs in the scrap yard but is a good runner for it's age and someday in the future with the (help of some future Montelloians) would like to get together some day and one by one get these sights cleaned up.

Building Ideas.

Back in '93 I bought 90 pallets at interstate brick of this type of block they are seconds and got them for $10 a pallet with 40 block on each pallet and at that time I had this notion of building a good sized garage with them. Well ideas and times have changed and that isn't going to happen at least not on the residence, after building a small structure (way back then) I still have 48 pallets left and have been thinking about getting them out of here and transporting these block to the land and build a structure with them, It's alot of work involved but I thought it would be a good start on something that I already have to build with. I do realise to some folks this may not be a very GREEN way to go as for as conservation maybe concerned cause of the energy it took to produce this type of product however that being said the energy that took to make these block has already been spent. OK didn't really mean to get into to much detail on this and just wanted to share some thoughts...

A VERY rough draft idea for hot water.

This is just a rough idea that I thought about for hot water, a very rough draft. And more practical for the winter time. P.S. Not sure if it would definitely work out or not!

The Homestead.

Where the Tee Pee is-is where we have our trailer on, and that's our Homestead. We have other acreage in other areas.

Have any of you considered converting a school bus into a living quarters? This is a bus that I won on EBay, we had to pick it up in Palermo California, and bring it back home to Salt Lake.

Elizabeth Town NM.

                                          This an old town Called Elizabeth Town NM. AKA ETown NM. My father was born in 1910 To my grandmother Mary Johnson, and to my Grandfather that immigrated from Austria/Tyrol Italy. It was one of those border deals where the two countries staked claims But after WW1 the southern part was given to Italy, and north, northeastern was given to Austria. It is a very beautiful place why he left there we don't know the real reason. My Grandfather operated a Saloon there called the (The first and Last chance Saloon)
  
 Etown had up to 7000 people in it's hay day it was gold mining town and it also hosted alot of familiar out laws such as Robert Thomas Ketchum, AKA Black Jack Ketchum-the Ketchum gang, Clay Allison, It was also known that Doc Holiday played alot of poker there too. Billy the kid, And Jessie James had been know to go there as well. This is a post card my wife found for me.

What to do?

What would one really do if a major disaster was to happen in our city and food and water is short, and the help of emergency services would be way overly burdened to come to help you and your family, your friends, your neighbors? And this is if they could come to your aid in the first place cause the roads would be destroyed and flooded anyways. Everyone would be trying to help themselves before they could try to help anyone else. Just imagine if this was to really happen to us-to what has happened to Haiti.

I do realize we have resources that is no comparison to what Haiti  has. There would be chaos, and we the people would try to help one another as much as we possibly could. I know the LDS church would try to help with food, and such, to those that are in the fold first perhaps maybe I'm wrong but even so can they help everyone in need for a sustainable amount of time?

And then there is the problem of people over taking other people if they have what they need, and such people may not be able to protect themselves from such invasions. Then we have to consider curfews being imposed and the possibility of marshal law being set in!

Just maybe initially all this would be the least of our problems cause we have all the lakes and reservoirs, and all the rivers all around us that we would be in a major flood situation as well. Can an individual be prepared for all of these scenarios? I guess partly, and then to an extent.
 If anyone out there have any takes on this I have open ears...

Farmall Tractor

Some plans.

I have been looking on You Tube and watching a few Vids on some Old farmall Tractors using all sorts of implements. Found an old farmall pulling a old (tine) type cultivator with steel wheels, anyway the cultivator that I have on the land now is what I plan to use to remove a complete 400ft, square (perimeter) area of sage brush, not that I don't like sage brush but I don't like the idea of any of it catching on fire or tripping over it in the immediate area that we'll be walking about. About 100ft. north of the camp trailer is the place where I'd like to build a pavilion at. I would like it to be at least 16 to 20ft. wide and perhaps 30 to 35ft. long. However there is a lengthy but small finger of a rise a (berm) very faint but i need to grade it down just a bit to make it level. I'll be using power poles for the supports and other places in the structure.

Montello, Nevada Ghost Tales, A fun Read...

In the day Montello, Nevada is the same as any other American settlement, but this settlement has scary enigmas hidden in the night. Objects dance around, voices coming out of nothing. A number of folks who live here argue there are no ghosts, but anybody who has stayed a day in Montello, Nevada knows better.

These are some of the spooky things that have happened here recently.
The phantom of a man having half his head missing can now and then be spotted at night floating down Charley Creek.
The ghost of a young-looking female in a blood-covered wedding gown was made out at night studying Charley Canyon in detail. There have been many reports on the subject of this phantom in the area.
The phantom of a 10 foot enormous person was witnessed turning toward the onlooker beside Warm Springs in the early morning hours. Other people in the vicinity have had identical events with a very similar ghost.
The ghost of a young girl materialized in a mirror in a Montello flat; the ghost was only visible in the mirror. This ghost is enormously active in this vicinity; there have been one or two additional accounts of this particular ghost. One thing is for certain, it is certainly a creepy ghost that you wouldn't wish to run into on a dark night.

The spirit of a woman with half her head absent was distinguished in Danger Cave State Park at the ranger station going crazy. The onlooker ran off when he witnessed the spirit. Either way, this is an unlikable ghost that any rational person would not want to bump into.

Retrieving the truck...

 That's me going to retrieve the truck, it's close to a 150 yards away from the camp trailer. At one point we was about 20ft. away and i kept trying to get closer but to no avail, and so this was the end result of my efforts. It was about 10:30 at night when we arrived Saturday night and it was just to slippery with the weight I was pulling and the truck was getting hot. So I let it wait till the morning.This time I made a left U turn and stayed on the sage brush I got up the road till I was above the trailers then made a right turn south towards the back of camp trailer. And I unloaded this Darn trailer! Well just a small story of my thinking at 10:30 at night. Hmm, scary huh?

I never get tired of looking at this landscape, it all changes so much at different times of the day or when the clouds come over the mountains, and to see the sun break through the clouds in the valley always a sweet sight.

Interesting landscape, It just looks like rolling hills from this point but then you can run into wide steep washes

Being up here and being able to look about the Vast Landscape is Awesome. This particular day there is some haze set in.

I've been thinking that this poor old trailer really needs to fit in with the environment better, Camo color perhaps?

Well with all her effort the screw pulled back out...lol... I'll end up getting a couple of stove bolts and go all the way through the wall! that should hold it.

Getting the Implement and poles off the trailer. Oh yeah, the rear tine caught my tail light and broke it off. I brought a spare tail light with me just in case. Well I did end up putting a new tail light on.
